About

Jay Kohler is a Composer and Performer emerging from the woodlands of Southeastern Massachusetts. After a brief stint of wanting to be a hip hop emcee, he switched over to the guitar at age 13 and quickly learned to be loud. Through high school Jay discovered all sorts of music, started and dissolved many bands, and became active in his schools’ music department; including one notorious ensemble that required spandex attire.

After graduating, he headed off to Rhode Island College where he tried his best at classical music but longed for jazz and transferred to UMass Dartmouth. There, he gave up on jazz and focused on composition. Jay’s musical palette was expanded quite a bit during this time and he fell in love with avant-garde and experimental traditions while retaining his love for rock and pop.

Since graduating from UMass, he has been active locally; teaching, composing, performing, arranging, and working with his rock bands “Sun of Sound,” and “Something About Horses.”

Jay is available for writing music for film, book trailers, video games, web videos and many different types of ensembles. He is also available for performances (theater, wedding, live, etc.) and studio work.
